Evergreens are often the most valuable part of your landscape. They provide year-round colour, shelter from the winter winds, and a dark, unchanging background to highlight the seasonal changes of your other trees, shrubs, and perennials. Most evergreens are slow in growth, gaining only 5-8 cm a year so it is best to start with a medium sized plant so the wait will not be as long. Although evergreens creep along in height you must still consider the mature height and spread when planting.
